For this studio we were asked to create a cartoon that depicts a political, social, environmental, or school issues that interested us. This art piece represents the big idea of stories because I chose to tell a story through my cartoon. The story is about the little boy sitting and looking forlorn in the center of the piece. On the left, I chose to tell the story of the boy’s home life. The refrigerator is empty, people are constantly fighting, and the world is constantly telling him that he’s not good enough. The right shows the things that he is yearning for – encouragement, love, and acceptance. The educational issue I chose to highlight in this cartoon is classroom management. Many teachers have students who act out in their classrooms and it’s frustrating. But what they might not realize is that there is a lot more to the child’s story.
In my own classroom I would love to use political cartoons and I think that could be done in several ways. In relation to the big idea of stories, I think that students could create political cartoon depicting stories in literature and stories in history. I think that students could also use political cartoon to express their feelings on issues in the current news or create public service announcements to place around the school.

For this studio, we were asked to pick a favorite story or book from our childhood and then create a mock story quilt. I chose to use an image from the book Julius Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes. I thoroughly enjoy many of Henkes’ books and this book is one of my favorites. This artwork is related to the big idea of stories because our mock story quilts depict imagery from published stories. I think that the idea of story quilts highlight the details of a story. The border of the quilt (the small blocks) represents everything that is going on in a story. Stories are made up of small little details that work together to make something beautiful. The larger image in the center depicts the overall theme of the story. In my piece, it tells the story of the sister who dislikes her new baby brother.
In my classroom, this lesson could be used for children to expand on a book they are reading (or perhaps an old favorite) and highlight the overall theme of the story. Students could also do this for events in history. The smaller squares along the outside depict different elements of the story, while the image in the center depicts the main event.

For this studio we were asked to bring in an object that is mass-produced, abundant, often discarded. Then, we thought about the story of the history of the object and created a meaningful mini-sculpture that changes its story. This studio represents the big idea of stories because you are writing a new story of your found object. I chose to use a phone book as my found object and its story is that it holds information you want to remember. When I created my sculpture I changed the story to be a press book. The new story for the object is that it is a place to keep memories and beautiful things.
I feel that this would be a project that would be suited for older elementary. Students could use this studio to represent how people’s stories can change over time. It could also be used to teach children the importance of reusing objects and not wasting materials. This causes students to think about the environment and how to preserve it. It also could be used to teach students the importance of finding beauty in the simple things.
